I became a CBT therapist simply because I care about people, which is why I chose to work in the NHS. Early in my life and throughout my life I have struggled through a number of difficult experiences and as a result I have become stronger in many ways. I am passionate about helping others to improve their own mental health and well-being and believe my personal life experiences enable me to truly empathise with the many difficulties I support clients with in my CBT work.
I treat everyone as an individual. I believe everybody thinks and behaves in line with their life experiences whether they have been positive or negative experiences. These experiences can contribute towards both positive and negative thoughts, beliefs and coping behaviours. Rather than make judgements about people on what I see on the surface, I try to understand what is going on underneath the exterior which is often who people really are.
My practice is a friendly, calm, supportive and non-judgemental space where together we can discuss the difficulties you are having and identify your current thinking styles and coping strategies. We will examine how they may have a negative impact on your life in the here and now. We will explore the possible underlying cause of these cycles of thoughts and behaviours and how they may be helping to maintain negative emotions such as depression, anger, and anxiety. Once we have all this information we will work on changing your identified unhelpful thinking and behaviours to break the cycles that help to maintain uncomfortable/distressing emotions.
CBT is a collaborative and structured psychological therapy. This means both you and I will work together on your difficulties and you will take an active role in your therapy.
CBT is about teaching you to be your own therapist, so that by the end of therapy you will be able to manage your difficulties with increased knowledge and a better understanding of yourself. You will also be able to draw upon a toolkit of techniques to help you maintain the gains you have achieved during your therapy.
I work in line with the BABCP Code of Practice which means your therapy will always remain confidential and be delivered in a professional manner.
With 24 years’ experience working in the NHS including 16 years’ experience working in a primary care mental health service I have a long history of working with people. I have been a practising clinician in CBT and EMDR therapy in Doncaster, South Yorkshire since 2010 and I am trained to deliver a number of therapies that can help those struggling with common mental health problems. I am a certified Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist and a member of EMDR Europe. I am also trained to deliver other models of psychological therapy such as Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP).
I am also an experienced facilitator of group CBT based courses for stress management, depression, panic, low self-esteem and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). As well as providing psychological therapy I am a certified CBT supervisor of trainee CBT therapists and qualified CBT therapists. I am also a certified clinical supervisor of Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs).
I provide therapy online. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic I have delivered CBT and EMDR therapy via video call using a secured communications platform. Therapy delivered online has proved to be just as effective as face to face therapy. Many people have preferred therapy via video call from the comfort of their own home which has proved to be very convenient, fitting in better with individual lifestyles, plus it has the added bonus of no travelling to and from appointments.

I have been approached by several agencies that provide psychological therapy services to employers, insurance companies and solicitors etc. Subsequently, as well as taking referrals from clients who contact me directly, I also provide CBT/EMDR therapy to clients referred from the following agencies:

I provide short term CBT therapy over 8-20 sessions in line with the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance. I follow NICE guidelines/recommendations to help me determine the treatment protocol and number of treatment sessions to provide for depression, anxiety related difficulties and trauma/PTSD.
I am a certified CBT Supervisor and I am able to provide clinical supervision to trainee CBT therapists who are completing the MSc High Intensity CBT Diploma and to qualified High Intensity CBT therapists.
I complete at least 30 hours of continued professional development (CPD) each year in compliance with BABCP regulations to ensure I am consistently developing my knowledge and skills in psychological therapies. This is also a BABCP requirement to maintain my accreditation status. Accreditation must be renewed on a yearly basis which is a BABCP requirement.

I am able to work with people who have occasional suicidal thoughts and no intentions of acting on such thoughts. This type of thinking is common among people struggling with mental health problems and can be managed within a therapy setting as they do not usually interfere with the effectiveness of therapy.

I am able to provide a CBT consultation and assess your suitability for psychological therapy if you have abstained from drug/alcohol use for at least 6 weeks or more.
